Partial Boot Cover/Topper Tutorial by EnvelCosplay Partial Boot Cover/Topper Tutorial by EnvelCosplay
I've been getting a lot of questions about boot covers; usually the ones I made for Mami, but a lot of general boot cover questions as well. While I did not make true, full boot covers for Mami, I did do quite the alterations on a pair of ugly little ankle boots. I like to call these "partial" boot covers because they only remake a portion of the shoe, rather than covering or remaking the entire shoe. Some call these boot "toppers", essentially they are about the same thing, though personally when I call something a "topper" it's more like my Sailor Moon V-shaped toppers. :P

As it says in the tutorial, I did not take photos with the intention of making a tutorial, but I do hope that the photos I did take are useful/helpful to answering some of the questions I keep getting.

Anyway, hope this helps!

Just as a note: There are a ton of tutorials and resources for making full boot covers (where you cover or remake the entire shoe), please Google before asking me questions about them. A quick search will probably answer most/all of the questions you could have about making boot covers.

I used faux leather/upholstery pleather for mine.  I would recommend any soft leather, faux leather, pleather, vinyl, a nice suede.  Really, anything with the look you want and with enough body will work :)

was the boot cover difficult to sew on? seems like that material is pretty thick and would be hard to hand sew. would it be possible to use a machine to sew it on or would it be too hard to maneuver it under the presser foot?

It actually wasn't too hard to sew through at all. For the most part, I stuck the needle through some stitch holes that were already in the boots, and for the others I just had to use a thimble to help push the needle through. I couldn't fit them through the machine because of the size/shape. :(

Oooh, I like the method of cutting away what you don't want and using it to make a pattern. That's a great idea.

Nice tut, thanks ^.^ I'll let you know if I make anything using it!

I used tacky glue and a paint brush to smooth/glue the hair down to the tape/wire base. :3

The wire didn't seem to work, probably cause I had a weak one, but I think I have another way of tackling it. Just gotta make a trip to Wal-mart and get that stupid floral cone like I was originally going to do >[.
